Glass Railings for Teaneck Stairs & Decks

A glass guard meets the same code and carries the same load as a run of pickets. It just does not block the room while doing it. We build frameless tempered panels for interior stairs, landings, decks and balconies around Teaneck, set on standoff posts or dropped into a base shoe, in whichever of 15 finishes you like. Measuring the run costs nothing.

What Holds the Panels

Two Mounts, One Question: What Is Behind the Finish

Before anything about looks, we find out what the panels will fasten into. Stair stringer, deck rim joist, masonry, a concrete slab: that answer decides the mounting and sometimes decides the design. Standoffs pin the panels to a face with round posts, which leaves daylight under the glass and almost no metal in the picture. A base shoe is a channel that runs the length of the guard, and the glass drops into it, so what you read is a single straight line at the floor. Both take tempered safety glass. Both can be finished to match whatever else is in the room.

Height and spacing are not style choices. A guard has a required height, it has to resist a load pushed at the top, and the openings around it are regulated. So the panel height and the way we break up a long run get drawn to meet code first, and the look follows from there. Thickness tracks the span and the mounting. The choices that are actually yours get made at the measure: standoffs or shoe, a top cap or a bare polished edge, and which of the 15 finishes lands on the posts and clips.

  • Standoff posts, or a base shoe the panel drops into
  • Every panel tempered safety glass, sized to the span
  • Framing, joists, masonry or slab checked before we quote
  • Guard heights and openings drawn to code, not eyeballed
  • 15 finishes across posts, caps, clips and hardware

Teaneck Stairs & Yards

Center-Hall Stairs and Decks Under the Tree Line

Split-levels run half a flight up and half a flight down, and each of those short runs usually carries a rail that cuts the room in two. Swap it for glass and the level you are standing on borrows light from the one above it. Center-hall colonials get a bigger version of the same effect, since the stair sits in the middle of the plan and everything in the house has to look past it. A Tudor with a lot of interior woodwork gains most of all, because glass leaves the trim on display and takes the barrier out.

The shade on Teaneck's streets does not stop at the curb. It carries into the yards behind those houses, and a picket rail turns that into a row of vertical bars every time you sit down. Glass leaves the yard whole. Outside, the anchoring question gets stricter, since a deck rim, a masonry stoop and a poured landing each hold hardware differently, and weather factors into which finish we recommend. We check all of it at the measure, and Lodi being about 12 minutes out makes that easy to get on the schedule.

  • Interior stair and landing rails for colonials and split-levels
  • Deck and porch rails that keep the backyard in view
  • Anchoring checked against stringer, joist, masonry or slab
  • Free measure of the run, with Lodi about 12 minutes away

Frequently asked questions

Yes, at the Lodi showroom, 80 Industrial Rd, roughly 12 minutes out Route 4, with the shop in the same building. The selection wall puts all 15 finishes in your hand, which beats judging them on a screen, and we will go through standoff against base shoe mounting with you there. Monday through Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 9 to 4. Midland Park, 108 Greenwood Ave, is by appointment.

Length of the run, panel height, glass thickness, the mounting system, what the hardware bites into, and the finish you land on. A short interior stair and a wrapped deck are not the same job, which is why nobody should quote you one over the phone. We look at the run first, then write it up so every part of it is visible.

Usually it works well. The catch is what the panels attach to, so we look at the stringer, the newel positions and the framing before promising anything. In houses this age the run may not be perfectly even step to step, so panels get cut to the geometry that is really there rather than to a tidy drawing.

It is tempered safety glass, specified for a guard rather than for a shower wall, and the thickness follows the span. The thing that decides whether a rail feels solid is not the glass anyway, it is the anchoring underneath. That is why we look at the substrate before quoting instead of discovering it on install day.

Indoors, glass cleaner and a cloth every now and then. Outdoors, rain and a hose do most of the work for you. The optional protective coating keeps water from clinging, so spotting builds slower and comes off easier. If you want the least color in a thick panel, low-iron ultra-clear is the one to ask about.

Once we have measured, panels are cut and finished in Lodi, generally 1 to 2 weeks, and most runs are set in a single visit. Interior stair rails move on that schedule with nothing else in the way. If anything outside needs an approval first, that clock belongs to whoever issues it, not to our shop.
