Two systems cover almost every railing. Standoff mounts pin the glass through round hardware into the face of a stair stringer, a slab edge or a wall, leaving a slim gap underneath and very little metal in view. A base shoe captures the bottom edge of the glass in a continuous channel along the floor for one unbroken line. Both carry heavy tempered safety glass in your choice of 15 finishes.
Railings are a code job before they are a design job. Height, the load the rail has to take, how the glass is held and how far apart the anchors land are all governed, and the substrate matters: a wood stringer, a concrete balcony slab and a framed deck rim each want different hardware. We work that out at the measure, lay out the panel splits, and our own crew sets it. Cap the top edge or leave it polished and open.
Renovated two-families and older houses around Hackensack tend to put the stair right inside the front door, where a run of wood spindles or a half wall blocks the only light the entry gets. Swapping that for glass is one of the biggest changes you can make without moving a wall. The stair keeps doing its job, the entry gets its light back, and the newel and treads someone refinished stay visible.

The number depends on the length of the run, how many panels it splits into, the glass thickness, whether you go standoff or base shoe, the finish you pick and what we are anchoring into. About one to two weeks from measure to install for most runs while the panels are fabricated to size in our shop, then an install that is usually a single visit. Longer runs and unusual anchoring can take a little more, and balcony work sometimes waits on a building access window. You get the real schedule at the measure, not a hopeful one.
It is heavy tempered safety glass, the same family of glass that goes into a shower enclosure, and it is sized to take the load a railing has to take. Tempered glass is also what you want in the rare event it does break, since it breaks into blunt pieces rather than shards. The safety lives in the hardware and the layout as much as the glass, which is why heights and anchor spacing get planned at the measure.
Often, yes, but the building has a say. Condo and rental buildings usually have rules about what may be anchored into a slab or a facade, and the association or management may need to approve the system before anything gets drilled. Start that conversation and we will supply whatever they need to see. We handle access, elevator protection and working inside the hours the building allows.
Less than people expect. It is a vertical panel nobody leans on the way they lean on a shower door, and a wipe with glass cleaner brings it back.
