Sliding Shower Doors for Ramsey Baths Where the Floor Is Already Spoken For

A bypass door is the one people underestimate. Two panels of heavy tempered glass hang from a slim header and pass each other, so nothing swings and no floor is surrendered to a door arc. In a Ramsey townhome bath where a vanity, a hamper and a radiator already have their spots, that matters more than looks. We build to the width you actually have. The measure is free.

How a Bypass Is Built

On a Slider the Metal Shows, So It Gets Chosen, Not Tolerated

Here is the honest difference between a bypass door and a frameless one. On frameless, the hardware is a few small pieces and the glass does the talking. On a bypass, there is a header across the top, a guide at the bottom, rollers you can see, and a pull on each panel. That metal is part of the finished look whether you planned it or not. So we treat the finish as a real decision rather than a leftover. Polished chrome, brushed nickel, matte black and oil-rubbed bronze all read differently against tile, and the header is the piece your eye lands on.

The rest of the build is choices you make in the room. Both panels can be made to slide, or one can be fixed and the other run past it, and which you want depends on where the valve and the head are. Glass is heavy tempered stock, clear or low iron, with or without a protective coating. Ask about the bottom while we are there: a tub deck, a tiled curb and a flat threshold each change how the guide is set. And ask how the panels come out, because being able to reach behind them is what keeps a slider from getting grim.

  • Header, rollers and pulls in the finish you actually choose
  • One fixed panel or two that slide, decided at the measure
  • Heavy tempered glass, clear or low iron, coated if you want
  • Panels that come out so you can clean behind the overlap

Ramsey Bathrooms

The Baths in Ramsey's Downtown Townhomes and Condos

Walk the blocks around Ramsey's Main Street and you find a lot of townhomes and condos, some near the 1868 station that still runs, some much newer. Those bathrooms were drawn efficiently. The tub is boxed in on three sides, the vanity is directly across from it, and the door to the room opens into the same few feet of floor. Put a swinging shower door into that plan and two doors are fighting for the same air. A bypass takes the fight out of it. Nothing projects past the face of the opening, and the room keeps every inch it started with.

There is a second reason this door suits Ramsey. In a house where everyone is out early and back late, the shower enclosure has to be the thing nobody has to think about. A bypass has no hinge to loosen and no swing to drip a line across the floor each time it opens. Two notes we give up front. If the tub is staying, we furnish and set the glass, and only the glass: no demolition, no plumbing, no tile. And Ramsey has no Accurate showroom, so glass and finishes get looked at in Midland Park, thirteen minutes south, by appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Nowhere in town, honestly. There is no Accurate showroom in Ramsey. Head for 108 Greenwood Ave in Midland Park instead, a thirteen minute run once you clear Allendale, and book the time first because that location works by appointment. Glass, hardware finishes and samples are all there to handle, which is usually enough to settle a header finish. Industrial Rd in Lodi is the one you can simply walk into, weekdays and Saturday.

Yes, and it is worth knowing before you fall in love with the idea. Two panels have to overlap in the middle, so the clear way in is a little less than half the total width. On a very narrow alcove, that leftover opening gets uncomfortable to step through. Around thirty six inches of overall width is where we start asking whether a hinged door or a fixed panel serves you better.

The header spans the opening and carries both panels, so what it fastens into is the first thing we check. Wall to wall is the normal way, with the ends anchored into solid material behind the tile at each jamb. If one side is a half wall or a knee wall, the layout changes and the load gets put where the structure actually is. That is a measure question, answered with a tape and a stud finder in hand.

Quieter than the old aluminum ones, because the panels ride on rollers rather than sliding through a wet channel. Whether they can be stopped from banging depends on the system: some setups take a soft close that catches the panel and draws it the last inch on its own. If that matters in your house, say so at the measure, because it is decided when the hardware is specified rather than after.

Mostly, yes. A modern bypass can be built with the glass running to the wall on each side and no vertical jamb showing, so the only metal is the header at the top, the guide at the bottom and the pulls. It reads far closer to frameless than to the framed unit people remember. Whether your opening allows it comes down to how plumb those two side walls are.

On many systems, yes. The pull on the outer panel can be specified as a long bar rather than a knob, which gives you somewhere to hang a towel without drilling another hole in the tile. It is a small decision that people tend to be glad they made. Pick it in the same finish as the header so the enclosure still reads as one piece.
