Sliding Shower Doors for the Tub Alcoves in Older Tenafly Baths

The tub sits in its alcove, three walls around it, and something has to close the fourth side. A bypass enclosure does it with two panels on one track, so nothing needs room to swing and nothing lands on the floor of a small bathroom. Both panels are cut to your alcove, not trimmed down from a stock unit, and what happens at the bottom of them is worth more attention than most people give it.

Wear and Cleaning

The Parts That Wear, and the Parts You Clean

Ask anyone who has lived with a bypass door what they would change and they will not say the glass. It is the bottom. A framed unit sits in a track fastened to the tub deck, and that track holds everything a shower produces: water it cannot drain, soap, grit off feet. It is why so many of these enclosures get pulled out while the glass in them is still perfectly good. A top-rolling build has almost nothing down there, a slim guide and a sweep, so the tub deck stays a tub deck and one pass of a cloth gets all of it.

Above, the wear items are few and worth knowing about. The rollers are the only moving parts, and on the heavy-glass build they run on an exposed bar you can see and reach, which is deliberate: nothing that needs attention is buried inside a hollow header. That bar is finished the way the rest of the hardware is, in polished chrome, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze or matte black. The sweeps under each panel are consumable, like a wiper blade. Where the two panels overlap, the seam is closed by the overlap itself rather than a joint you have to maintain, and the ends where glass meets tile are sealed.

  • Bottom track collects grit, a top-rolling build mostly avoids it
  • Rollers run on an exposed bar, reachable rather than buried
  • Sweeps under each panel are replaceable wear items
  • Ends sealed to tile, the joint worth checking once a year

Tenafly Alcoves

The Long Tub Alcove Under an Old Window

A tub set into three walls is a common arrangement in older baths here, and in plenty of them a window sits on the outside wall, sometimes directly over the tub. Good to live with, awkward to put glass around. The track and its brackets have to clear the casing. The upper panel has to stop somewhere sensible against the frame. Water has to stay off wood that was never meant to be rained on. Sliding glass handles that better than a door swinging toward a sill, and the track height can be held to whatever the opening allows.

Width is the other reason people land here. Past a certain opening a single hinged door becomes a large, heavy sail that needs somewhere to go and puts all of its weight on one pair of hinges. Two panels split that same width in half and hang from a track spanning the full run, so the glass stays manageable and the room keeps its floor. Plenty of baths in this borough were updated once, decades back, and still have a wide alcove with a tired framed unit inside it. Fresh glass in that same space is a short job and a large change.

  • Track and rollers laid out to clear a window casing
  • Wide alcoves split into two panels instead of one heavy door
  • Glass cut to the alcove, not trimmed to fit a stock unit
  • Hardware finishes to match what is already on the tub

Frequently asked questions

That depends on how the enclosure is laid out, which is exactly why it comes up at the measure. On most alcoves the valve and spout sit at one end, so we plan the moving panel to open on that end and leave the fixed half toward the back. Then you reach in, run the water and step in without sliding anything twice. Tell us which end your valve is on when you call.

Usually, and it is one of the first things measured. The track needs a run of solid wall or tile above the opening, so we check the height from the tub deck up to the casing and to the ceiling before quoting anything. If the casing sits low, the track can be dropped and panel height cut to suit. If it cannot be done cleanly, you will know while we are still in the room, not after glass is made.

Heavier than a framed bypass, and the wall is the reason we look before quoting. The overhead bar carries both panels, so it has to fasten into something solid: studs, blocking, or a properly backed tile wall. At the measure we find that framing and set the mounting points from it. If the substrate will not carry a top-rolling unit, a framed bypass is the honest answer and we say so on the spot.

Overlap and sweeps, mostly. The panels overlap where they pass, so the seam is never a straight gap, and clear vinyl sweeps close the bottom edge down against the tub deck or curb. The ends are sealed to the tile. Trouble starts when glass is hung level on a curb that is not, which is why the track gets shimmed and set true instead of following whatever line the tile gives us.

You can choose. Clear is what most people picture and it shows the tile off. Low-iron glass drops the faint green cast you see on the edge of standard glass, which reads cleaner in a white bath. Obscure and textured options give privacy where a bathroom is shared. There is also a protective coating, which makes the surface shed water more readily. Those are worth comparing in person rather than in a photograph.

Lodi, at 80 Industrial Rd, about sixteen minutes out. Hours there run 9 to 5 during the week and 9 to 4 on Saturday, no appointment needed. You can see full enclosures standing up, and the glass and finish selection wall is right beside them. The Midland Park location on Greenwood Ave is closer to twenty-five minutes and books by appointment. There is no Accurate location in Tenafly itself.
