Shower Door Replacement in Ramsey: What Your Existing Opening Will Allow

Replacing a shower door is not the same job as building a new one, and it is not that job in reverse either. The tile, the pan and the curb are already set, and they decide what can go back into that space. Our work starts by reading those constraints, not by picking a style. Then we cut the glass to them in our own Lodi shop and set it. The measure at your Ramsey house is free.

The Existing Opening

The Pan, the Curb and the Tile Edge Decide the Menu

Three things are already settled before we arrive: the pan, the curb and the edge where the tile stops. Between them they set the menu. A curb that is narrow or rounded may not carry a heavy frameless panel, and a jamb with nothing solid behind it will not take a frameless hinge, so a channel or a header goes in instead. If the tile stops short of where the old frame sat, that edge has to be covered or the new glass has to land inside it. None of this is bad news. It is the shape of the problem, and it is better known before anything is ordered than after.

Then there is the measuring itself, which is different on a replacement. A unit that has been in place for twenty years was shimmed into that opening, and those shims have been hiding how much the walls actually lean. We take the old enclosure out first where we can, or we read past it, and template the opening as it truly stands. What comes back is cut to those numbers. What happens to the screw holes and the old silicone line is settled in the quote, along with who takes the old unit away, and the tile stays where it is.

  • Pan, curb and tile edge read before any style is promised
  • Templated to the opening as it stands, not as it was shimmed
  • Glass cut and edged in our Lodi shop to those exact numbers
  • Screw holes, silicone line and removal all settled in the quote

One Bathroom Out of Service, for Part of One Day

The question we hear most on a replacement in Ramsey is not about glass. It is about the calendar. Plenty of houses here run on train times, and in a home with one full bathroom, losing the shower is the part that has to be planned. So here is the shape of it. There are two appointments at the house. The first is the measure, which is short. The second is the install, and an install is normally completed in a single visit. Between them, fabrication runs about one to two weeks, and your existing door stays right where it is and keeps working.

What we take out varies with the block. A colonial in the Country Club neighborhood often still has a framed unit from a remodel two or three decades back, with sound tile around it and a track that has finally given up. A condo near the station is more likely to have the builder enclosure that came with the unit, chosen for cost rather than for that bathroom. Different doors, same approach: read the opening, cut to it, leave the tile alone. Midland Park sits thirteen minutes south of Ramsey, so both trips are short ones for our crew.

  • Two visits at the house: a short measure, then the install
  • About one to two weeks of fabrication, shower still usable meanwhile
  • Country Club colonials and downtown condo units both read the same way
  • Thirteen minutes from Greenwood Ave keeps measure and install trips short

Frequently asked questions

Start by telling us what it is doing. A door that drags at the bottom is usually a hinge or a sweep. One that no longer meets its strike is often the frame moving rather than the glass. Water at a single corner is generally geometry. Some of those are hardware questions and some mean the enclosure has reached the end of its life, and the honest answer is that we would rather look than guess from here.

Close, but not always identical, and it is worth saying so before the quote. A framed unit hides its edges under metal, so new glass sometimes lands a fraction inside or outside the old line depending on how the tile was cut. Where the old frame covered a rough tile edge, we plan for that at the measure. What does not change is the tile itself, the pan or the curb.

It changes what we can anchor to, which is the main thing. A molded surround has thin walls with a cavity behind them, so the anchor points have to be found rather than assumed, and heavy frameless hardware is often not the right call on one. A lighter enclosure, or a channel that spreads its load along the wall, usually is. We check what is behind the surround before proposing anything.

Usually less than people fear. Most framed units are fastened to the surface and sealed with silicone, so the frame, the fasteners and the silicone bead come off and the tile stays. Where a jamb was set during the tile work, the edge underneath can be rough or unfinished, and the new enclosure is then planned to cover or clear it. We look at that before quoting so nothing is discovered halfway through.

Because a leak has a cause, and we look for it before quoting. Most come down to three things: a curb pitched the wrong way, a gap that lines up with the shower head, or a seal that was never right for the geometry. New glass alone does not fix a curb pitched outward. If that is what is happening in your bathroom, you will hear it from us at the measure rather than after.

No. The measure happens at your house in Ramsey and there is no charge for it. Seeing glass in person is optional. If you want to, Midland Park on Greenwood Ave is the near one and it is appointment only, and there is glass, hardware finishes and samples there to look at. Ramsey itself has no showroom of ours. Lodi, farther out on Industrial Rd, is open to walk ins.
