Replace the Shower Door in Your Englewood Bathroom

A tired shower door drags down a bathroom that is otherwise fine. The tile still looks good, the vanity is holding up, and the thing spoiling the room is a pitted aluminum frame with a track you cannot get clean. Changing it out is about as low-impact as home projects get. We measure the opening you already have, build new glass to it in our Lodi shop, and set it. The walls never get touched.

The Process

What Actually Happens on Replacement Day

It runs in two visits. On the first, we measure and template the opening as it sits today, note where the old frame was fastened, and check the condition of the tile and the curb. Then the glass is cut and the hardware prepped in Lodi. On the second visit, the crew takes the old unit out, cleans up the fastener holes and the old sealant, sets the new glass, and seals it. Drop cloths go down, the old door leaves with us, and we tell you how long to let the sealant cure before the first shower.

What goes back in is up to you, and the opening does not limit you as much as people assume. A framed slider can be replaced with a frameless panel, a semi-frameless enclosure, or a new bypass setup on a slimmer track. You choose the glass, clear or low-iron ultra-clear, whether you want the protective coating, and which of the 15 finishes the hardware wears. If only one panel of an otherwise sound enclosure has cracked or clouded, we can build a replacement panel to match the rest instead of redoing the whole thing.

  • Measured to the opening you already have
  • Old door hauled away, tile left alone
  • Frameless, semi-frameless or bypass going back in
  • Single panel replacements when the rest is sound
  • Cut in Lodi, installed by our own crew

The Door Ages Faster Than the Bathroom Around It

Bathrooms in Englewood tend to get updated in waves. An in-town colonial near downtown may have had its bath redone a couple of decades ago, and an East Hill primary bath may be far newer, but in both cases the tile and the fixtures usually outlast the glass by a wide margin. Aluminum pits. Vinyl sweeps go brittle. Tracks stop coming clean no matter what you scrub them with. The room is not really finished, it simply has one part that aged badly ahead of everything else, and that part is the door.

Here is the part worth knowing about older Englewood houses: the opening is not the same shape it was when the last door went in. Walls move over a century. A door built to the original dimensions will bind, gap, or leak at the bottom corner. So we template on the day, cut to what the room measures now, and use hardware that can absorb the difference. It also means the tile that somebody paid good money for stays right where it is. Our Lodi shop is about 14 minutes west when you want to see finishes first.

  • Templated to how the opening measures today
  • Tile, curb and plumbing all stay as they are

Frequently asked questions

No. The new glass is built to the opening you have now, so the tile, the curb and the plumbing all stay put. We remove the old unit, clean up the old fasteners and sealant, and set the new door against the same walls. If a tile is already cracked behind the old frame we will point it out, but nothing here requires tile work.

In most bathrooms, yes. The old framed unit does not dictate what comes next, though the wall condition and where the studs or solid backing sit do matter for a heavier frameless panel. We check all of that at the measure and tell you straight whether frameless, semi-frameless or a new bypass door is the better build for your opening.

Mostly the same things as a new build: the size of the opening, the glass thickness, whether you want standard clear or low-iron ultra-clear, and the hardware finish. The style you switch to matters as well, since a frameless panel uses heavier glass than a bypass setup. We measure first, then price it. Numbers over the phone would not be real numbers.

Not long. The measure is one short visit, the fabrication happens back in Lodi over roughly 1 to 2 weeks, and the changeover itself is normally a single visit. You are only without the shower for the install and the sealant cure afterward, and we tell you exactly how long that cure needs before you use it.

Often it does not. When the surrounding panels and hardware are still in good shape, we can cut a single piece of glass to match and set it in place of the broken one. Thickness, edgework and how the panel was originally mounted all decide whether that is practical, which is what the measure is for. If matching it cleanly is not realistic, we will say so.

Usually it is the single highest-impact change you can make in that room. The tile and the fixtures in those houses often still look good, and a clean panel of tempered glass modernizes a bath that reads dated because of one worn-out aluminum frame. It also ends the leaking and the black grime in the track, which is the practical reason most people call.
