Replacing the Glass in a Franklin Lakes Shower Someone Else Built

Replacement is not a blank sheet. Somebody else already decided where the hinges land, which way the door swings and what sits behind the tile, and in a Franklin Lakes primary bath those decisions were made for an opening far bigger than a standard one. We read them first, keep what is worth keeping, and build glass that fits a layout we did not draw. The stone stays. The pan stays. The glass and the hardware change.

You Are Replacing Glass Into Someone Else's Layout

The first visit is mostly looking. Where the old hardware was anchored tells us what lives behind the tile, because a screw that hit solid wood behaves nothing like one that spent twenty years in a plastic sleeve. The curb tells us how the water was meant to leave. Old silicone lines show where the last installer was fighting a wall that was out of plumb. And if the new glass is heavier than what is coming out, which it often is, we need to know whether the hinge wall can take it now, not on install day.

Then we template the opening as it stands today, not as it was drawn. Tile settles, walls move, and a replacement gets measured off the surfaces that actually exist. Old anchor points get planned around: new hardware covers some of them, a few get filled, and where a hole cannot be hidden we would rather shift the hinge line than pretend it is invisible. The old unit comes out on install day and not before, so the shower stays usable while your glass is cut in Lodi, which typically runs a week or two.

  • Anchor points read for solid backing before heavier glass is quoted
  • Opening templated as it sits now, not as it was built
  • Old door stays in service until the day new glass arrives
  • Tile, stone, pan and grout all stay where they are

When the Old One Was Built Light

A Big Enclosure Built Light Tells On Itself

The complaints tend to arrive in a certain order. First the door stops closing where it used to, then a gap opens at the strike, then water starts finding the floor at one corner. On a large enclosure that pattern usually points at the same thing: glass and hardware specified light for the span they have to cover. Weight and time do the rest. Whether it gets solved with hardware or with new glass depends on what is in there, which parts are still made, and how the panel itself has fared. We will tell you which after we look.

The good news in these rooms is that everything except the glass is usually still excellent. Stone set well twenty years ago is still set well. So the rebuild stays narrow: thicker glass sized to the same opening, hinges placed where there is something solid to hold them, a sweep and seals chosen for the way this shower actually gets used, and hardware in a finish that suits the room as it looks today rather than as it looked then. One measure, one install, and everything you liked about the bathroom stays put.

  • Heavier glass sized to the opening the old unit under-served
  • Hinges relocated to solid backing where the original missed it
  • Sweeps and seals picked for how the shower actually gets used
  • Finish matched to the room as it looks today

Frequently asked questions

Almost always it is the hardware rather than the glass. Hinges wear, a pivot loosens, and a heavy panel drops a fraction, which shows up at the strike as a gap you can see light through. What can be done about it depends on the make: some hardware is still available and adjustable, some was never built to be serviced at all. We will tell you which one you have after we look at it.

Sometimes directly, sometimes after a little work. A framed unit spreads its load along the jambs, so the walls may never have needed real blocking. Frameless hardware concentrates that same weight into a few points instead. At the measure we find what is behind the tile and where it is, and the hinge line gets set to suit it. If nothing solid is there, we will say so before you order glass.

Low, and lower because we plan for it. The old unit gets cut free of its silicone rather than pried, fasteners come out rather than get yanked, and edges get protected before anything moves. Stone chips when somebody is in a hurry with a flat bar. Our own crew does the removal, so nobody unfamiliar with the room is the one holding the tools.

Usually, by replacing the mismatched pieces rather than all of them. Glass from different runs can vary in tint and in edge finish, which is what your eye keeps catching. If what is left in there is sound, we can build to its thickness and edge treatment and change the hardware across the whole thing so the finish reads as one set. If the match will not be close, we would rather say so.

Photos and a rough width to start. Then look in a bottom corner of a panel for a small etched stamp. That is the tempering mark, and it confirms the glass is safety glass, often with the maker alongside it. Beyond that, note whether the door swings or slides, whether there is a fixed panel, and where it leaks if it leaks. The measure fills in the rest.

Yes, and that visit is free. The drive from Midland Park runs about twelve minutes through Wyckoff, so a look at what you have is easy to fit in. If you would rather start by comparing hardware in person, Greenwood Ave is by appointment only, and the Lodi showroom on Industrial Rd takes walk-ins on weekdays, nine to five, and on Saturday until four.
