Ramsey is a walking town: a Sunday farmers market, a Main Street downtown, tree-lined streets. The bathrooms behind those front doors are a different story, and a framed shower enclosure is often the oldest thing in the room. Frameless replaces it with heavy tempered panels, hinges, clips, a handle and no track holding water. We measure your opening, cut and finish the glass at our own Lodi shop, then set it with our own crew. The measure costs nothing.
A frameless panel has no frame to spread its weight, so everything it weighs travels through two or three hinges into the wall. That wall has to have something solid behind the tile: framing, blocking, or backer that will take a proper anchor. Finding out what is back there is part of the measure, not a surprise on the morning of the install. If the hinge side turns out to be hollow, we change the plan while it is still on paper. The door moves to the other jamb, or the fixed panel and its clips take the strong wall and the door hangs off the header instead.
Thickness follows from that. Three eighths inch tempered glass covers most openings and is the usual call. Half inch is heavier and stiffer, and we go to it once a panel runs tall or wide enough that you would feel the flex in your hand. The heavier the panel, the more the anchor situation matters, which is why the two decisions get made together. From there it is finish and glass type. Whichever finish you pick carries across hinges, clips and handle: polished chrome, brushed nickel, matte black or oil-rubbed bronze. Low iron glass drops the green out of the edge. A protective coating makes hard water bead and run instead of drying on.
Ramsey holds two kinds of bathroom and we work in both. The colonials on the tree lined streets in the Country Club neighborhood were built with hall baths sized for a different era, tile set tight to a tub, and walls that have had decades to lean. Down by the Main Street and Route 17 stations there are townhomes and condos where the bathroom is newer, squarer and smaller. Frameless earns its place in each for opposite reasons. In the older bath, clear glass gives back the far wall a frame was hiding. In the newer one, it keeps a tight room reading as one room instead of a shower and a leftover strip of floor.
The second thing Ramsey households ask about is the calendar, and it is a fair question. A frameless job needs you at home twice: once for the measure, which is the visit that decides everything, and once for the install, which is normally a single trip. In between, fabrication runs about one to two weeks. Our Midland Park showroom is thirteen minutes down the road, a straight run south past Allendale. That one is appointment only, so it is worth calling ahead rather than turning up. Glass, hardware finishes and samples live there for exactly this kind of visit. Lodi on Industrial Rd is the walk in room, about twenty-five minutes out.
Yes, and it is normal work. A bench, a knee wall or a low return means the panel is not a plain rectangle, so the glass gets laid out with a notch or a step, and every one of those cuts is made before the panel goes into the tempering oven. Nothing can be trimmed after. That is exactly why the measure is done with a level and a story pole rather than a tape alone.
Most frameless doors are hung on pivot hinges that let the panel move both ways, and there is a reason for that. A door that only swings out drips on the floor every time you open it. One that can push in lets you shake the water off inside the curb first. It also matters in a tight room, where an out only swing might clip a vanity or a radiator. We set the stop at the measure.
It can. Tempered glass is strong across its face and vulnerable at the edge, and a chip is a stress point that can sit there for years and then let go all at once. When it does, the panel breaks into small blunt pieces rather than shards, which is the whole reason safety glass is used in a shower. If you have a chipped edge, keep an eye on it and mention it to us.
Not much. Frameless hinges are solid metal with a set screw holding the tension, and the thing that shortens their life is not use, it is standing water at the base. Wipe the hardware when you wipe the glass. If a door starts to sit low or drags at the strike, that is a hardware adjustment question, and it is worth describing to us before anything gets forced.
Yes, and it is one of the cleaner things frameless does. With no curb, the glass lands on the tile and the floor is pitched to a drain, so what we look at first is that pitch and where the water travels. A fixed panel with an open entry gap often beats a door in that layout. Where a door is wanted, the sweep sits closer to the floor and the swing gets set to keep spray inside.
