Check Your AreaIt can, and what decides it is mostly everything around the glass. Service life comes down to hardware quality, how precisely the door was set, the water it sees and how it is cleaned. We use tempered safety glass (3/8 or 1/2 inch thick on frameless doors), and our own crew sets every door level and plumb rather than handing it to a subcontractor. After that, it is a squeegee habit and a new sweep when the old one wears.
For glass you plan to live with, it is worth a serious look. The coating is optional and is applied to the glass to help it shed water and soap residue, so less dries onto the surface and routine cleaning is easier. The old door and its metal frame come out, and the new glass is cut to your measurements in our Lodi shop. You can move to frameless or semi-frameless. Either way, the quote is firm and itemized.
They can, over years of daily use, which is why hinge quality matters on a door you plan to keep. A hinged glass door hangs its full weight on its hinges, and every swing works them, so a quality hinge set level at install holds its alignment longer. Warning signs are a door that sags, rubs the curb or no longer lines up along its closing edge. Finishes such as brushed nickel, matte black or oil-rubbed bronze keep their look with a soft cloth and mild soap.
Start by checking the sweep. It is the clear strip along the bottom edge of the glass, and with age and cleaning products it can stiffen, curl or split, leaving a gap for water. The seals on the door's vertical edges wear the same way. Both are wear parts, not a sign that the glass has failed. Text photos of the bottom edge and the hinge side to Jessica, and note where the water shows up.
A squeegee or towel after each shower does the bulk of the work, because water left to dry on glass leaves its minerals behind. Every week or so, wipe the glass with a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Skip scouring pads, powders and harsh chemicals on the glass and on the hardware. If you chose the optional protective coating, the same gentle routine suits it, and the glass should need less effort to keep clear.
