Both work, and the walls usually decide. We template either way, but a slim frame gives a little more tolerance where a wall has bowed or the tile sits proud, which comes up often in bathrooms that are decades old. You can go thicker if you want the heft, though part of the point is that the framing carries load so the glass does not have to.
