Custom Mirrors for Wyckoff: Vanity Glass, Wall Runs, Full Length Panels

A mirror is one of the few things in a house built to a single number, and there is no adjusting it once it is cut. Too small and the piece floats. Too big and it fights the room. So we take the dimension in your Wyckoff house, off the actual wall and the actual vanity, and everything after follows from it: how the edge is finished, where a wide run breaks into panels, how the glass is held up.

The Dimension Comes First, the Edge Comes Right After

Almost every piece we make starts as a number taken off your wall rather than a size somebody stocked. A vanity mirror gets run to the cabinet below it, or deliberately past it, so the proportion works. A wall mirror is sized to the field it sits in, stopping clear of a switch or carrying right into the corner. A full length panel is cut to the stretch of wall it will hang on. Mirror walls, and antique mirror where a room asks for it, are made the same way. The dimension is settled in the room, not picked from a list.

Then the edge, which is the part people underestimate. A polished edge is clean and modern, eased enough to touch, and it lets the glass sit frameless against the wall. A bevel cuts a wide angle around the perimeter that catches light and throws a thin line of color, and it suits an older house better than most people expect. Either way the grinding and polishing happen in our Lodi shop, so cutouts for outlets, sconces or a faucet come off the same cut sheet as the dimensions. Mounting follows weight and wall: clips where a piece may come down later, adhesive with mechanical support behind a large run.

On a Mirror Wall, the Seam Is the Real Decision

Wyckoff runs to large rooms, and large rooms invite large mirror: a long double vanity in the primary bath, the wall above a stair landing, a dining room that wants depth, a lower level set up for exercise. Past a certain size a mirror stops being one piece. Glass gets heavy and awkward faster than anyone expects, and there is a practical ceiling on what can be carried through a doorway, taken around the turn in a staircase and lifted flat against a wall without flexing. So a wide run gets planned as panels.

Where those seams land is the design work. Left to chance they wander, and the eye finds them immediately. Planned, they get centered on the room or lined up with what is already there: split evenly either side of a vanity centerline, stopped at the end of a cabinet run, tucked where a corner or a sconce already breaks the wall. Butted tight with polished edges, a joint reads as a line rather than a gap. We draw that layout at the measure, standing in the room with the vanity and the lighting in front of us instead of working off a sketch.

  • Wide runs planned as panels before any glass is cut
  • Seams centered on the room or aligned with cabinetry below
  • Polished edges butted tight so a joint reads as a line
  • Layout drawn in the room with the lighting in front of us

Frequently asked questions

Either can be right, and the choice is worth making before anything is cut. Matching the cabinet gives you a tidy vertical line down each side and suits a vanity already sitting in an alcove. Running wider, out to the wall or to a pair of sconces, makes a small bath read larger and hides a cabinet that sits slightly off center. We look at the lighting and the wall on the visit and lay it out with you.

Larger than most people expect, and the limit is rarely the glass itself. It is the route. A big piece has to come off the truck, through a door, around whatever turn your stairs take, and get lifted flat without flexing. We look at all of that on the measure. Where a wall is wider than one piece can safely handle, we plan panels and place the seams on purpose.

We come out. Numbers you take are a fine way to start the conversation and rough out a layout, but a mirror is cut to a dimension that has to be right the first time, so the final one is ours. The in-home measure is free. If you want to see glass and finishes in person first, Midland Park is about seven minutes away and works by appointment.

The edge simply stops, and finishing it properly is what makes that work. A polished edge is smooth, slightly eased and safe to touch, and it lets the glass sit flush and frameless. A bevel does the same job while adding a wide angled border that picks up light. A frame is a furniture decision, not a requirement, and plenty of walls read better without one.

There is, and it is about the wall as much as the glass. A modest vanity mirror can go up on clips or on adhesive over a sound surface. Once a piece gets large, adhesive on its own is not what we rely on, so it gets mechanical support as well. We check what is behind the plaster at the measure, because how a piece is held has to be settled before it is cut, not after it arrives.

Keep liquid off the edges and most of it takes care of itself. What ruins a mirror is cleaner running down the face and sitting where the backing meets the edge, because that is where it creeps in. So spray the cloth rather than the glass, work in from the perimeter, and dry the bottom edge afterward. Avoid anything ammonia based. That habit outlasts whatever you do to the face.
