The honest version is that all three exist for a reason. If the opening is standard and the goal is a working door quickly, a stock unit is not a mistake. Frameless is a different product, and it is the one that requires a measure.
Tempered panels are strong across the face and vulnerable at the edges and corners. It means the hardware plan is settled at the measure, not on install day, and it is the strongest argument for buying from the people who will hang the door.
