Yes. Thickness is one of the larger levers on a glass quote. Half-inch tempered glass carries more material than 3/8, weighs more, and that weight pulls up the hinge and clamp specification, the fabrication time, and the number of installers standing in the bathroom. Thickness is chosen for the opening, though, not bought as an upgrade.
Raw glass is bought by area and by thickness. A 1/2 inch lite of a given size holds more material than a 3/8 lite, and it takes longer to cut, seam and polish because there is more edge to work. It also spends longer in the tempering process, and once it comes out of that oven nothing can be altered: no holes, no notches, no trimming. Every hinge cutout and handle hole is machined first, so a thicker panel carries more of that up-front labor as well.
Handling risk rides along with it. Larger and thicker lites are heavier at every stage, and a shop that cuts and edges in house, as ours does in Lodi, absorbs that risk rather than moving it around.
A hinge is rated for a load. Move the same door from 3/8 to 1/2 inch and the hinges, the clamps and the anchoring all step up to carry it. Headerless layouts push that further, because the wall and the hinges are doing work a header would otherwise take. Widen the door and the same thickness suddenly asks for a heavier hinge set again.
Labor follows the identical curve. A heavy lite is a two-person set, the anchors have to reach something structural, and shimming has to be exact, since a stiff panel will not flex to disguise a wall that leans.
The right answer comes out of the opening: door width, the span of any fixed panel, whether a header is in the design, and how far the walls sit out of plumb. A modest door in a square opening can be well served by 3/8, while a tall fixed panel or a wide swing door wants 1/2. Picking thickness to hit a number is how doors end up sagging within a couple of seasons. There is also a limit to what thickness alone can tell you. A door built on 3/8 glass with good hinges, careful anchoring and a fitter who takes the walls seriously beats a 1/2 inch panel hung casually every time. It is one input among several, and it happens to be the easiest one to quote against and the easiest one to misread.
All shower glass used here is tempered safety glass, so the failure behavior is the same at either thickness: it breaks into small blunt pieces rather than shards. What thickness changes is rigidity. A stiffer panel flexes less in daily use, which keeps hinges and clamps under less working stress and keeps the door hanging true longer.
Not automatically. The weight has to land somewhere solid. Hinges anchored into a stud or into blocking can carry it; hinges landing on tile over hollow board cannot, and no hardware choice fixes that. A measure checks what sits behind the tile, whether the curb is level, and how far the walls lean before anybody specifies thickness.
