A frameless door holds itself up, so the glass has to stay rigid across its own span. That is why the choice sits between 3/8 and 1/2 inch tempered rather than the thin stock a framed door can use. Bigger and thicker means more material, more edge to polish and more machine time, and every notch and hole is cut before the panel is tempered because it cannot be touched afterward.
Hardware then has to carry whatever the glass weighs. Hinges and clamps are rated, and a wider or taller door steps that rating up.
