Steam glass has one job a shower door does not: holding vapor in the room. That pushes the enclosure to the ceiling, adds a transom panel across the top, puts continuous seals on every edge, and asks for hardware that lives in constant humidity. More glass, more sealing detail and a tighter measure are where the difference goes.
A standard shower door stops short of the ceiling and lets air move over the top. A steam room cannot allow that, or the steam leaves as fast as the generator makes it. So the enclosure runs full height, and the space between the top of a normal door and the ceiling becomes a transom panel, often with an operable section so the room can be vented after use. That is additional tempered glass, additional edge work and additional hardware in a spot that is awkward to reach.
Ceiling height therefore matters to this quote in a way it does not to a standard one. A bathroom with a high ceiling means a taller enclosure, and the panels get heavier along with it.
Vapor finds any unsealed edge. A steam enclosure is detailed so the glass meets glass, tile and ceiling with continuous seals, and the door closes against a full perimeter instead of a sweep at the bottom. Each of those joints is a component and a labor step. Hardware sits in heat and humidity all day, so it is specified for that environment and the finish is picked knowing it will be wiped down constantly.
The room itself has to be built for steam as well, with a properly sloped and sealed ceiling and the right substrate behind the tile. Glass cannot rescue a room that was never built to hold vapor, and that is worth settling before an enclosure is ordered.
On a standard door, a small variance shows up as a slightly uneven gap. On a steam enclosure, the same variance is a place where vapor escapes and condensation runs down the tile. Ceiling height gets taken at several points, walls get read for plumb top to bottom, and the transom is set out from the real ceiling line instead of an assumed one. Access affects this quote as well. A transom and full-height panels have to physically reach the bathroom, travel whatever stairs sit between the front door and the room, and be lifted into position by people standing on a curb. In a compact North Jersey bathroom that is a genuine constraint, and it gets settled at the measure rather than discovered on the day.
Most are built with one. A hinged or operable transom lets the room clear after a session, which keeps humidity from sitting against the ceiling and the hardware. Some layouts handle it with a small operable panel instead. Either way it gets designed into the enclosure at the start, because a transom cannot be modified once the glass has been tempered.
Sometimes, but glass is the last question rather than the first. The room needs a generator, a sealed and sloped ceiling, and wall and floor assemblies detailed to hold vapor. Once the room itself is right, a full-height enclosure with a transom can be measured and built for it. Starting at the glass on an unprepared room causes trouble later.
