A rail has to be solid, and it does not have to be a wall of pickets. We build frameless glass railings for interior stairs, decks and balconies, tempered safety glass held on standoffs or set into a base shoe. There are two common ways to carry a glass rail. Standoffs are round finish-matched pins that pass through the panel and anchor into a stringer, a deck rim or a wall, leaving daylight underneath. A base shoe is a continuous channel the panel sits down into, reading as one clean line along the floor or the deck edge. Either way the panel is tempered safety glass, and either can take a top cap or go without.
What we spend the most time on is whatever sits behind the glass. A railing is a code item and a safety item, so before quoting we look hard at the structure it will anchor to, framing, blocking, joists, a concrete curb or masonry, and whether any of it needs reinforcing first. Heights, panel spacing and gap dimensions get set against that, not against a photo. Then the panels are cut and tempered to those numbers.
The split-level is the Paramus house that gains most from glass. Those half-flight staircases sit right in the middle of the living space, usually behind a run of wood spindles or a wrought iron rail that chops the sightline between the levels in half. Swap that for glass and the two floors read as one room again, at the same rail height, set to code at the measure.
Outside, lots here are generous by Bergen County standards, which means real decks and raised patios rather than a token landing. A picketed rail turns the best part of the yard into a striped view. Glass hands the sightline back, and up on an elevated deck it also knocks the wind down at the table. We look at the rim joist and the posts before quoting, since an older deck sometimes wants blocking added first.

By the job, once we have seen it. What drives it: the total run of railing, glass thickness, panel height, standoff versus base shoe, the hardware finish, and any structural work the anchoring needs first. That last one is why a phone number would be meaningless. We measure free, then give you a firm itemized quote. Monthly payment options are available if that helps the timing.
The measure is quick and free. Panels are then cut and tempered to your numbers, generally about one to two weeks, because tempered glass cannot be trimmed on site once it has been made. Installation is usually a single visit for a typical stair or deck run. Longer runs with many panels can take more time, and we will tell you which yours is at the measure.
It is tempered safety glass, the same category used in shower doors, and it is thick. Panels are made to be leaned on and pushed against, and we set heights and gaps to meet code rather than eyeball them. A lot of parents actually prefer it: no spindles to climb, nothing to get an arm stuck between, and you can see the stairs from the next room.
Usually the deck stays put. What has to be right is the structure the panels anchor into, so we look at the rim joist, the post spacing and how the framing was built before committing to anything. Sometimes blocking gets added, sometimes a post is reset. If the deck itself is failing, we will say so rather than bolt glass to it. You get the honest answer at the measure.
Rain does most of the work on an exterior rail, and glass is easier to clean than a picket rail with three sides to every spindle. Indoors it is a wipe with glass cleaner.
