Choose 1/2 inch tempered glass for tall or wide frameless panels and 3/8 inch for a standard opening. Both are heavy safety glass and both are correct; the thicker sheet resists flex, feels more solid in the hand, and holds a long door true. Height, panel width and hinge layout decide it, not preference alone.
A sheet of glass behaves like a beam. The taller and wider it gets, the more it wants to bow, and a bowed door reads as a door that does not line up with its jamb. In a shower under roughly seven feet of glass height with a normal door width, 3/8 inch stays flat and swings clean. Push past that, hang a door taller than standard, or run a long fixed panel off a single header clip, and 1/2 inch is the material that keeps the top edge in a straight line. On steam enclosures, where a transom and a full-height door are common, the heavier glass is the usual specification.
Hinges, clamps, U channel, sweeps and header bars are all made in versions matched to the glass they hold. A 1/2 inch panel does not simply drop into a 3/8 inch clamp, and a hinge sized for lighter glass will sag under the heavier one. A thickness change is therefore a whole-assembly change: gaskets, wall anchors and the blocking behind the tile all follow it. Wall preparation matters most of all. Heavy glass wants a hinge that lands in solid framing or in blocking set during the rough-in, not in tile and thinset alone.
There is a real cost to the thicker glass in weight and handling, and in a small bathroom it buys very little. A short door on a tub deck or a narrow enclosure between two tiled walls is fully served by 3/8 inch, and the lighter panel is kinder to its hinges, easier to open with a wet hand, and easier to carry up a staircase in a house with tight turns. Pick the thickness the opening asks for. Anything past that is weight the hardware carries every day for no visible gain.
One more practical note: a heavier door takes a slightly firmer push to swing and a slightly firmer hand to stop, which is worth a thought in a household with young children or an older parent.
Not in everyday use. Both thicknesses are tempered safety glass and both are strong across the face. What breaks tempered glass is an impact or a nick on an exposed edge, and a half inch panel has exactly the same vulnerable edge as a three eighths panel. Protect the edges during handling and keep hard objects away from the corners.
It is better not to. Panels of different thickness sit on different hardware, meet the wall at different reveals, and leave a visible step where the door edge passes the fixed panel. If an enclosure needs a heavier door because of its height, the fixed panels are normally run in that same thickness so the whole assembly lines up.
