How is custom glass measured?

For a custom shower enclosure, the project professional checks the actual opening, the finished surfaces, the proposed glass line and the way the door will move. Photos, plans and approximate dimensions can start the discussion. Final fabrication dimensions and hardware decisions need the selected system and the conditions at the opening; one smallest measurement does not describe the whole job.

The opening and the proposed enclosure belong together

A plan can show the intended layout. The room shows the surfaces and obstructions that the finished enclosure must meet. Tell the team whether the shower is an existing installation or part of a remodel, and which surfaces are still due to change.

For shower glass, the questions include the panel arrangement, door movement, nearby fixtures and the condition of the walls and threshold. The professional measuring the project decides which dimensions and checks the selected enclosure needs. A number copied from an existing door or a catalog is not, by itself, a custom fabrication specification.

Record the condition instead of choosing a fix

If a wall looks uneven, a tile edge projects or the opening has a bench, show that in a photo and mention it. Do not assume that a particular shim, channel or seal can accommodate every variation. Adjustment and support requirements belong to the particular glass and hardware system.

Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering, as the tempered-glass warning in this example installation manual explains. That is a reason to resolve the design and verified dimensions before the order, rather than treating a later trim as the solution. The example manual is technical background, not a specification for your enclosure.

Prepare the questions for the visit

Have the door style and hardware finish you are considering ready to discuss. Point out the vanity, toilet, towel bars and other features near the proposed door movement. If the bathroom is unfinished, ask what needs to be complete before final measurements can be confirmed.

The measurement-preparation guide gives a short information and photo checklist. For mirrors or other custom glass, explain the intended use and location so the team can discuss the appropriate measurement process for that product.

Approximate dimensions can help describe the project. Ask the company responsible for the enclosure how final dimensions, site conditions and the selected hardware will be verified before fabrication. Do not treat a homeowner sketch as an approved glass-cutting order.

Ask for the steps and current project schedule when the specification is confirmed. Timing depends on the actual order and the conditions that still need to be resolved; a general measurement guide cannot promise a completion date.
