A glass table top weighs about 2.9 pounds per square foot at 1/4 inch, 4.9 at 3/8 inch, 6.4 at 1/2 inch and 9.7 at 3/4 inch, per a float glass maker's 2024 technical data, so a 42 by 72 inch dining top in 1/2 inch glass comes to about 135 pounds. The per square foot figures come from a float glass maker's technical document, revised in November 2024, which lists plain soda lime float glass at 2.918 pounds per square foot for 1/4 inch, 4.932 for 3/8 inch, 6.411 for 1/2 inch and 9.734 for 3/4 inch. That maker computes weight as 157 pounds per cubic foot times the thickness in inches, divided by 12, using a nominal thickness for each trade size.
A second publisher lands in nearly the same place. The Glass Association of North America's 2008 bulletin prints approximate weights of 3.0 pounds per square foot at 1/4 inch and 9.8 at 3/4 inch, and says its figures do not apply to patterned glass or to assemblies of more than one lite; the National Glass Association published a newer paper on the same subject in 2025. Both describe plain flat glass. Tempering, per the National Glass Association, is a heat treatment of that same glass, heated close to its softening temperature and then cooled rapidly.
The method is area times weight per square foot. Multiply length by width in inches and divide by 144 for square feet; for a round top, multiply 3.14 by the radius squared first. Using the float glass maker's 2024 figures, a 24 by 48 inch coffee table top, 8 square feet, weighs about 23 pounds at 1/4 inch, 39 at 3/8 inch and 51 at 1/2 inch.
On the float glass maker's figures, a 36 by 60 inch dining top, 15 square feet, comes to about 44 pounds at 1/4 inch, 74 at 3/8 inch, 96 at 1/2 inch and 146 at 3/4 inch, and a 42 by 72 inch top, 21 square feet, to about 61, 104, 135 and 204 pounds. Rounds follow their area: on the same maker's figures, a 48 inch round is about 37, 62 and 81 pounds at 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch, and a 60 inch round about 57, 97 and 126.
The weight of the glass is one number; what the base under it can carry is another and belongs to the base or furniture maker. A heavy top presses on its pads or supports, so those points have to land where the base was built to take load, which is why the top is sized from the base itself.
Weight also shapes the trip into the room. The National Glass Association notes that edge damage or poor edge quality significantly reduces glass strength, so a heavy top is carried without its edges striking a door frame or a stair. Whether a top rides home in a car, how many people carry it and whether delivery suits it are questions for the shop at the order. Thickness is a decision for the thickness guide; shower panel weight is answered separately.
Whether a heavy glass top fits in an SUV comes down to the cargo opening, the flat load floor, and whether the top can lie fully supported without an edge touching metal, since a struck edge is where glass gives way. A tight fit is a real risk, not a small one. Ask the shop whether pickup suits your piece before planning around it.
Trade thickness names are labels, not measurements. A float glass maker's 2024 technical data figures its 1/4 inch sheet at a nominal 0.223 inch and its 1/2 inch sheet at 0.490 inch, and notes the real sheet is approximately that thickness but may not be exactly it. Weight follows the real thickness, so a chart that assumes a full fraction runs slightly heavy.
