How do you clean frosted shower glass?

Frosted glass has a finely roughened face that grips soap film, so wash it with warm soapy water and a soft nylon brush rather than a squeegee, then rinse and blot it dry. The polished back face cleans normally. Never take abrasives or blades to the frosted side; scratching changes the pattern permanently and cannot be polished out.

Why film shows up as grey haze

Acid etched and sandblasted surfaces are covered in microscopic peaks and pits, and that is exactly what scatters light and gives frosted glass its look. It also gives soap, body oil and minerals far more surface to hold onto than a polished face offers, and it keeps a squeegee blade from ever making contact with the low points. Film that would wipe straight off clear glass instead settles down into the texture and reads as a dull grey cast across the whole panel, heaviest wherever the water runs.

The method, in order

Wet the frosted face with warm water. Mix a few drops of dish soap into a bowl of warm water and work it over the surface with a soft nylon brush, moving in small circles so the bristles reach in rather than gliding across the top. Let it stand two or three minutes on heavy film. Rinse thoroughly from the top down, because leftover soap dries into the same haze you just removed. Then blot, do not wipe, with a clean waffle weave towel, since wiping drags lint into the texture and leaves it there.

Frequency beats force on an etched face. A light wash every week keeps the surface open and takes only minutes, while a delayed wash every few months means soaking, repeat passes and a panel that never quite comes back to where it started.

If the dullness is mineral, not film

If dullness survives a soap wash, it is mineral rather than film. Warm distilled white vinegar held against the face with a soaked cloth for several minutes, followed by the brush and a full rinse, lifts most of it. Repeat instead of escalating to something stronger. Powdered cleansers, steel wool, melamine pads and razor blades all shave the tops off the etched surface unevenly, leaving shiny patches that never match the rest of the panel and cannot be blended back in.

Judge your progress on dry glass with the light coming from behind you. A wet frosted face looks even and clean no matter what is buried in the surface, so inspecting mid-wash tells you nothing useful. Dry one small test area if you want an answer before committing to another round.

Usually, yes. One face is etched or blasted and the other stays polished, and installers generally point the smooth side into the shower so the wet side is the easy side. Slide a fingernail across each face to tell them apart. If the etched side is the wet one, expect the brush routine weekly rather than monthly.

It hides droplets and fingerprints better, and film worse. Nothing shows a single dried drop like a flat clear panel, so frosted looks tidier day to day. Film, though, accumulates invisibly down in the texture until the entire face has gone flat and grey, which is a slower problem to notice and a much longer one to reverse.
