Most sliding-door leaks start at the bottom track. That track has raised dams and small weep holes meant to hold water inside and drain it back to the pan, and it fails when the weeps clog, when the track sits on a curb that pitches outward, or when the panels are hung so the inside one rides on the outside.
The track on a bypass enclosure is an engineered part, not a piece of trim. It has raised ridges that keep water on the shower side of each panel, a lower race where the panels ride, and weep holes that let anything caught in it drain back into the pan or the tub. All of that depends on the track being level along its length and sitting on a surface that does not tip toward the room.
Weep holes clog with soap film and hair faster than people expect, and a blocked track becomes a trough. Once the water in it reaches the height of the outer dam it goes over the front, producing a leak that feels constant and heavy and has nothing whatsoever to do with the glass or the rollers. Clear them with a thin pick and flush the whole channel before investigating anything else, because a clogged weep imitates every other failure on this list.
Two panels pass each other, and one of them has to be nearer the shower interior. Runoff from the inner panel must land inside the dam, and runoff from the outer panel must land in the outer race where the weeps drain it. Hang them backward and the overlap seam directs water forward over the front of the track every time anyone showers.
The same logic governs the vinyl bumpers along the panel edges. Those strips close the vertical seam where the two panels meet in the middle, and a missing or hardened bumper turns that seam into a channel aimed straight at the floor.
Rollers wear, and as they do the panel drops, tips out of vertical, and stops sitting square in its race. A panel out of plumb opens a wedge shaped gap at the wall jamb, wide at the top and tight at the bottom, and water finds it quickly.
The bottom guide matters just as much. That small block keeps the panel from swinging away from the track at floor level, and when it is worn or missing the panel can lift clear of the water dam altogether. Both parts are adjustable or replaceable, and both deserve a look before anyone concludes the enclosure has to be replaced.
The one away from the showerhead. The panel at the showerhead end takes the direct spray, so it belongs in the inner race, where its runoff lands inside the dam and drains back to the pan. Its partner rides the outer race over the weeps. Panels get swapped during a deep cleaning or a rushed install, and a swapped pair starts leaking the day it happens.
Both. Worn rollers announce themselves first by dragging or jumping, but the real consequence is geometry. A panel sitting low or out of plumb no longer aligns with its jamb or its bumper, which opens a gap along a vertical edge. Replacing rollers usually closes that gap without touching the glass at all.
