Are steam shower doors worth it?

Yes, if the room is actually built to hold steam. A generator heats the whole volume, and a standard door that stops short of the ceiling lets that vapor roll straight out into the bathroom. The point of a ceiling height enclosure

A steam generator does not warm the water, it fills the volume. If that volume is open at the top, vapor leaves as fast as it is produced, the room never reaches a working temperature, and the bathroom ceiling and mirror absorb the moisture instead. The enclosure exists to give the vapor a small sealed box to fill and hold.

That is why steam glass runs floor to ceiling. Where the ceiling is high, a fixed transom panel bridges the span above the door. Where it is very high, the enclosure gets a glass ceiling of its own so the working volume stays small enough for the generator to serve. Settling that volume early matters, because a generator is sized to the space it has to heat, and an enclosure that bleeds vapor turns a correctly sized unit into an undersized one.

The parts that keep vapor inside

The door itself is the least of it. A steam enclosure needs continuous seals at every panel joint, a header detail that closes the top completely, a door that seals against its jamb along the full height rather than only at a latch, and a deliberate way to vent once the session ends, usually an operable transom panel.

Everything is heavy tempered safety glass, and the perimeter sealant has to tolerate constant heat and saturation rather than occasional splashing. Leave out any one of those elements and the result is an expensive shower door with a generator behind it, which is the outcome the whole exercise was meant to avoid. Hinges and handles get chosen on the same basis, since a finish that shrugs off ordinary splashing can still pit under daily saturation.

The cost of skipping the transom

The common regret is a steam shower built with an ordinary door that stops a foot below the ceiling. The generator runs longer, the room never gets hot enough to be worth using, and the moisture that should have condensed on glass condenses on drywall and paint outside the shower.

Correcting it afterward means measuring the opening again and fabricating a transom and seal set to fit what was already built, around tile that is finished and a header that may need blocking added. That is far more work than doing it once. If a generator is in the plan, the glass belongs in the same conversation as the plumbing.
