Rarely, and when it happens the bottom channel is usually the reason. That track is designed to catch water and weep it back toward the pan, so it has to be sealed on the outside and left open on the inside. Accurate Glass & Mirror, forty years into Bergen County bathrooms, sees more leaks from a channel caulked backward than from any panel.
The sill on this style of enclosure is not a barrier, it is a gutter. Water runs down the glass, lands in the channel, and is supposed to weep out through small openings back into the pan. For that to happen the channel needs silicone along its outer edge where it meets the curb, and nothing along its inner edge.
Reverse that and the channel fills. Once it is full, water goes over the outer lip or out through the end caps, and the enclosure drips onto the bathroom floor every single shower. It is the most common failure in this category, and it usually traces back to a well meaning caulk job rather than to the door.
The wall channels hold the stationary panels and they sit in the spray zone on the showerhead side. If a vertical jamb was set without sealant behind it, water works its way between the channel and the tile, travels down the wall side of the frame, and exits at floor level where nobody thinks to look for it.
The tell is a wet spot that appears at the corner rather than under the door, plus grout that stays dark at the base of the wall channel long after the rest of the shower has dried out. Pull the end cap off the sill if one is fitted and look for standing water inside, which confirms a blocked drainage path rather than a torn seal.
The one bare glass edge on this kind of enclosure is the swinging door, and it carries a vinyl sweep the same way a fully frameless door does. That sweep is the only thing between the bottom of the door and the sill below it, and it stiffens over time with heat, minerals and cleaning product.
A hardened sweep stops making contact along its length, and water runs off the door edge past the channel entirely instead of dropping into it. Replacing one means pulling the old profile out of the glass channel and sliding a new one in, matched to the panel thickness. It is a small part doing a large share of the work.
Not directly. The top rail braces the panels and keeps the opening from racking, which matters for how the door aligns to its strike jamb, but it sits well above the water line. If a door has drifted out of alignment and stopped meeting its seal, a loose or poorly anchored header can be the underlying reason.
The ends are where sealant matters most. Water inside the channel travels along it and looks for the lowest exit, and an open end cap dumps straight onto the curb top and over the front. Seal the ends and the outer edge, and leave the weep openings on the inner face completely clear.
