Quick answer: Rutherford is the "Borough of Trees" — a walkable South Bergen town of canopied streets, a vibrant Park Avenue downtown, and century-old Victorians, Tudors and center-hall colonials. Most bathrooms here started life around 1900 to 1925, which means almost every project we touch is a replacement-in-older-bathroom situation: out-of-plumb walls, original plaster, sometimes original cast iron fixtures the homeowner refuses to part with. About 9 minutes from our Lodi shop via Route 17.

Rutherford at a Glance for Glass Projects

Rutherford (ZIP 07070) holds about 18,000 residents in a tightly built 2.8 square miles. The housing stock is genuinely old — the bulk of the homes were built between 1895 and 1930. Victorians and Queen Annes line streets like Lincoln Avenue and West Passaic. Tudors and Colonial Revivals dominate the streets around Lincoln Park and toward East Rutherford. A modest contingent of postwar capes and split-levels fills in the gaps. A handful of new-construction multifamily buildings near the Park Avenue downtown round out the picture.

The defining feature for glass work: those handsome old bathrooms. Most are compact (often a 5-by-8 hall bath layout), built into framing that's seen more than a century of settling, and clad in tile that's been there for decades. Almost every Rutherford project we measure is some flavor of "replace the tired framed slider, keep the tile, add a piece of beautiful frameless glass."

Recent Shower-Door Highlights in Rutherford

Three recent installs that illustrate the range. Locations are described by general area, not exact addresses.

Frameless Inline Above an Original Cast-Iron Tub, 1908 Victorian

A 1908 Victorian off Lincoln Avenue had a primary bath with the original 1908 cast-iron clawfoot tub still in place. The homeowner had been using a curtain for fifteen years and wanted to upgrade without losing the tub. We delivered a single 3/8-inch frameless inline panel set on top of the rolled tub edge, held by a heavy stationary clamp and a single inswing panel for entry. Polished-nickel hardware to echo the home's restored period feel. Ten days from measure to install. The bathroom now reads as deliberately period rather than improvised.

Replacement Frameless in a 1922 Tudor Hall Bath

A 1922 Tudor near Lincoln Park had a tired 1990s framed bypass slider in the 5-by-7 hall bath. The original 3-by-6 white-subway tile and pencil-trim border were both in beautiful condition. We templated the existing 60-inch opening, demoed only the door, and installed a frameless inline package: a 30-inch fixed panel and a 30-inch swing door, both 3/8-inch clear with brushed-nickel hardware. The bathroom went from "tired" to "stunning" overnight, without a single tile coming off the wall. Two-week turn.

Neo-Angle in a Compact Colonial Revival

A 1916 Colonial Revival near the Park Avenue downtown had a tight corner shower stall — about 36 by 36 inches — with a framed pivot door that always hit the toilet on entry. We replaced it with a frameless neo-angle: two fixed return panels at 45 degrees and a single inswing door, all 3/8-inch tempered glass with matte-black hardware. The compact bathroom visually opened up dramatically with the framing gone.

Recent Mirror Highlights in Rutherford

Mirror work in Rutherford skews toward beveled vanity mirrors that respect the home's period feel — and toward custom shapes that work around the quirks of old bathrooms.

Beveled Vanity Mirror with Corner Notch, 1910 Victorian

A 1910 Victorian on West Erie Avenue had a primary-bath vanity that bumped directly against an original window casing. The homeowner wanted a large mirror but didn't want to stop short of the trim — so we cut a custom corner notch around the casing and finished the entire perimeter with a 1-inch polished bevel. Looks like it was specified for that exact wall in 1910.

Twin Beveled Pair for a Symmetric Primary Bath

A renovated primary bath in a 1925 Tudor had two undermount sinks flanking a tall sconce. We cut two matching mirrors at 26 by 36 inches, each with a 1-inch polished bevel, and hung them with hidden cleat-and-clip mounts so no hardware is visible. The matched pair reads as a deliberate piece of cabinet work.

Other Glass Work in Rutherford

Two recent non-shower projects: a frameless interior glass railing on the main staircase of a renovated 1907 Victorian near Park Avenue (two runs, custom-pierced quartersawn oak handrail, brushed-nickel standoffs anchored carefully through original plaster), and a back-painted glass kitchen backsplash in soft warm white behind a 36-inch range in a renovated colonial. We've also handled a few commercial storefront repairs along Park Avenue over the years.

Why Rutherford Homeowners Choose AGM

Three reasons most Rutherford projects end up with us: proximity (about 9 minutes from our Lodi shop via Route 17, which keeps measure and follow-up turn times tight), 40+ years of experience templating very old housing stock (we know how 1900-1920 framing behaves and how to seal frameless glass tight against original tile), and in-house fabrication (we cut and finish glass in our own shop, install with our own crew, and never subcontract). Free in-home measures are standard, with no obligation. Most quotes return within one business day.
