Bypass doors put two panels on a track spanning the tub deck, and they slide past each other, so nothing swings out into a room with no space to give. A fixed screen is the other approach: one panel of tempered glass at the faucet end, open at the other, no track underfoot and no bottom rail to scrub. Which one suits you comes down to how the bathroom actually gets used.
Families with small kids usually want the opening closed, because bath time is a splash zone and a slider keeps water off the floor. A guest bath that mostly sees showers is a strong candidate for a screen, which reads lighter and lets you step in without moving anything. Either way we template the tub itself, since tub widths and wall conditions vary, then set the track or bracket in your chosen finish.
Plenty of houses in the village still have their original cast iron tubs upstairs, and there is rarely a good reason to lose one. They are deep, they are solid, and trading a vinyl curtain for glass is the cheapest way to make a hall bath feel finished. The tub stays exactly where it sits. Older tubs do come with quirks. A rolled cast iron rim is nothing like a flat modern deck, the plaster walls above it are seldom plumb, and tile from a mid-century update can sit at a slightly different depth on each wall. So we measure the tub and the walls together, then build the track or screen bracket to those numbers. If a tub is being swapped out first, we come measure after the new one is set.

After the measure, plan on roughly one to two weeks in fabrication, then an install normally done in one visit. Tub doors are among the faster jobs we do, since there is less glass to cut than a full enclosure. The glass is still made for your opening though, so nothing is coming off a shelf the same week you call.
Yes, that is a normal job for us. We measure the tub rim and the walls above it, then build the track or bracket to fit what is really there instead of assuming a modern deck width. Older tubs often sit against walls that are out of plumb, so the glass is cut to those actual numbers. Nothing about the tub has to change, and no plumbing gets touched.
We can cut and install a new panel for that opening and set it on adjusted hardware, so one broken piece does not mean replacing everything. While we are there we will look at the track and rollers, since worn hardware is often what put the panel under stress to begin with. If the track itself is past saving, a fresh pair of panels and a new track usually beats fighting the old one.
We do the glass. If your remodeler is pulling a tub and building a walk-in shower, we come in at the end and template the finished opening for an enclosure or a walk-in panel.
