Is there anything sadder than hard water deposits having their way with your frameless shower enclosure? Degenerating from gleaming showpiece to spotty mess happens faster than you might think.
Even though frameless shower enclosures are low-maintenance, they can still fall victim to the plague of spotting and discoloration caused by hard water deposits. So, you need to know about hard water deposits and frameless shower enclosures, because forewarned is forearmed.
What Causes Them?
Containing high concentrations of salt minerals (magnesium and calcium), hard water may have some health benefits. But it’s also known to wreak havoc in industrial machinery, due to its tendency to concentrate.
Hard water occurs when it rains and the water goes into the ground. As it does so, it accumulates minerals prior to entering bodies of fresh water. On exiting water treatment, it passes through pipes which may be old enough to contain rust.
Finally, it’s at your house, including the shower. Once the water is gone, you’re left with mineral deposits. These are typified by a film on your frameless shower enclosure that doesn’t wipe off. There’s a tendency for the deposits to accumulate around your drain and showerhead, also.
How to Get Rid of Them
Let’s face it, an unsightly film isn’t what you had in mind when you installed your frameless shower enclosure. You can get rid of it with a little elbow grease and the following natural cleaning agents:
- Lemon juice is a highly effective agent for removing hard water deposits. Using a spray bottle, place a significant quantity of lemon juice in the bottle and then mist your shower enclosure repeatedly, including the tiles. Let this do its work for 20 minutes, then rinse off with hot water.
- Vinegar can be used in the same way as lemon juice.
If you find that neither of these natural solutions works, you may need to find a chemical counterpart. You can find the right one by checking out online reviews of products which remove both soap scum and hard water deposits. We’re big fans of online reviews, as they tend to be the most accurate gauge of product effectiveness.
How to Prevent Them
If hard water is wrecking your shower mojo, then installing a soft water filter may be the right answer. Not only do these serve to remove the minerals causing the problem, they make drinking water taste better, appliances last longer and get your laundry cleaner, to boot!
You can also spray the glass and tiles with a lemon oil-based furniture polish. Once everything’s dry, polishing tiles, glass and any metal fittings with this creates a barrier that discourages spotting.
But without doubt, the best way to prevent hard water deposits is to have your frameless shower enclosure treated with Accurate Glass & Mirror’s preferred solution, Diamon-Fusion.
This clear, protective coating not only keeps your frameless shower enclosure looking beautiful for years, it reduces cleaning time and frequency. And who doesn’t want that?
